V & A

LONDON

The North & South Courts at the V&A are some of its oldest parts, dating from 1861-3. The refurbishment and repair of the historic glazed roofs was an essential first step in a wider programme of consolidation and repair to this part of the Museum, addressing long-standing issues of water ingress into the galleries beneath.

Repairs were carried out to the historic clerestories of the North Court, including matching historic glass, timber repairs, and repairs to the historic cast iron structure and brickwork in close coordination with structural engineers Alan Baxter Ltd. Improved maintenance access was an important element for allowing the roofs to be kept in good condition in the future and a temporary blackout system was installed to allow flexibility for the installations and exhibits beneath.

Internal redecoration included lime plaster repairs to the clerestory and restoring the original paint scheme making use of a dry ice process to remove subsequent coatings.

Previous work at the V&A includes the restoration and representation of the ceramic clad silver galleries.
