BOULTHAM PARK & STABLE

LINCOLN

Boultham Park lies just outside the central core of Lincoln City Centre, covers 50 acres, and is Grade II listed. Although a popular park with the public, it lacked any facilities and there was little that acknowledged its historical origins.

The project involved a combined landscape and buildings design strategy. The main architectural work involved the restoration of the Victorian stable block and the building of a new detached café, both of which would be occupied and run by a charity which helps adults with learning difficulties. Other works included the restoration of the Victorian bandstand, demarcation of the old mansion (long since demolished), the refurbishment of the pleasure gardens, and the rebuilding of various bridges.

The stable block had been badly damaged in a fire and only the external walls remained. The brief called for a robust but welcoming design, which would fit in with the historical nature of the site. The two-storey building was to provide teaching rooms and break out rooms for the students and offices for the staff.
