BECKFORD'S TOWER

BATH

Beckford’s Tower & Museum was constructed in 1826-27 as a folly and retreat for its owner William Beckford, housing his spectacular art collection and being the focal point of a landscaped approach known as Beckford’s Ride. Following his death, the tower became a funerary chapel with the surrounding landscape a cemetery, which later fell into disrepair and was de-consecrated. It was eventually acquired by the Bath Preservation Trust in the 1970s and it is possible to stay in the tower by arrangement with the Landmark Trust.

The Tower is Grade I listed and sits within both the Bath World Heritage Site and the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Thomas Ford & Partners acted as lead consultants, architects, and contract administrators, and were engaged with joint design and coordination with the professionals appointed by the client to carry out major repairs and restoration work to the tower and its immediate landscape.

“The works to the Grade I listed tower – which we were able to view on a visit in June this year – have been completed to a high standard and we applaud the vision and ambition of this project.” The Georgian Group
