BROOKLANDS MUSEUM

BROOKLANDS

The practice provided a multidisciplinary team for a unique project which has transformed the Brooklands Museum site by restoring the Finishing Straight of the original banked racing circuit and providing new display and storage facilities for the historic aircraft collection.

This has been achieved by carefully dismantling the listed WWII Bellman Hanger, removing it from its previous position on the Finishing Straight and reconstructing it on a new site nearby.

The Hanger was reconstructed, re-clad, and fitted with a new mezzanine floor – it now houses both aircraft exhibits and a new hands-on, interactive, display about aircraft manufacture. We also designed a new building, the Flight Shed, which provides a workshop, archive and space for aircraft exhibits. The restored Finishing Straight, a Scheduled Monument, now connects the famous Clubhouse and Banked Circuit for the first time in 75 years.

The project was short-listed for the Museum of the Year Award.
